The House

Tyn y Simdde (pronounced tin-uh- sim the) is a shortened form of “Tyddyn y simdde” meaning means ‘The Chimney House’. “Simdde” is the Merioneth version of the standard word “simnai”(chimney). Further north, in the old Caernarfonshire and Anglesey the word used would be “simdda”.The house  got it’s name from an unusual architectural feature, a window in the gable end underneath the chimney.  The chimney flue goes round the window!

The house sleeps up to 4 people:

  • bedroom with double bed
  • bedroom with 2 single beds or double bed.

Equipment

  • washing machine
  • wi-fi and unlimited broadband internet
  • fully equipped kitchen with fridge-freezer
  • microwave
  • bathroom with power shower
  • Living Flame gas fire and wood burner
  • Telephone for local calls and emergencies
  • Emergency lighting
  • First Aid Kit

ROOM BY ROOM

Kitchen:

1. Water.

Tyn y Simdde’s water comes from its own spring on the bank above the cottage.  All the water at Tyn y Simdde is filtered and fulfils the criteria for drinking water.

2. Cooker

To use the oven grill: Turn the third dial from the left, as you are facing the oven to the left for a single element grill and to the right for a double element grill turn right.

To turn the oven on: Turn the second dial, as you are facing the oven, to the fan picture. Then set the fourth dial to the required temperature. NOTE: The oven takes a long time to reach the correct temperature so make sure you leave enough time for it warm up.

The first dial is a timer.

Dining area:

There is a music centre in the corner. You can plug  an Iphone or Ipod directly into the stereo. Any other type of MP3 player can be plugged into the auxiliary input. The stereo will also play MP3 files from a USBpen or SD card. The instruction book is underneath the unit.

Living room:

The sofa and chairs are very light colours. If you are bringing your pets we would therefore appreciate that you use the blankets provided in the cupboard behind the sofa to cover them for protection.

Bedroom(s):

Bedroom One  – on the right at the top of the stairs. The light switch is on the LEFT as you enter the room. All lights are on double switches so you can turn the on and off by the door and next to the bed.

The bed has an electric under blanket. Please switch the blanket off before you get into bed.

Bedroom Two – on the left at the top of the stairs.

Mind the beam! The beams are part of the original structure of the house and are thought to be the reclaimed timbers of a ship. People were rather smaller when the cottage was built, so you may have to duck!

Both beds have an electric under blanket. Please switch the blankets off before you get into bed.

Bathroom

1. There are two switches for the bathroom just outside the bathroom door, one for the light and one for the fan. Please switch both on when you use the bathroom during the day. If you want to avoid the sound of the fan when using the bathroom at night, only use the one furthest from the bathroom.

2. There is a razor point next to the mirror in the bathroom.

3. The bathroom has an electric towel rail, which will be on when you arrive. If you want to switch it off, the switch is on the landing, low down on the right as you face the bathroom door.

The other switch is for the pump that takes water up to the bathroom. The pump is quite noisy, but only stays on for a short while. DO NOT switch this off as you will then run out of water.

OUTDOORS

Garden:

The garden has a large wooden table and chairs for eating al fresco with views over the Hermon Valley and Cader Idris

The garden opens up into the forest around the cottage. This is Forestry Commission land and you are welcome to use the forest and explore. Because we are within the Forestry Commission we are sorry, but we are not permitted to have any outside fires.  There is a stainless steel barbeque in the outside shed that you are welcome to use. Please make sure that is it put back in the shed in the morning after the use.

The fields next to the cottage are sheep fields, so please keep a close eye on pets, especially at lambing time. There are deer in the forest and plenty of other interesting scents for dogs to follow. The forest is a large area, so if you have dogs with you, please keep a close eye on them.

There are lights on the outside of the cottage that are motion sensitive and will come on automatically at night.
